Paul Hastings Secured Victory for Inpria Corporation and JSR Corporation in a Multi-Billion Dollar Inventorship and Contract Dispute

April 15, 2024

Paul Hastings LLP secured a victory on behalf of Inpria Corporation and JSR Corporation in a multi-billion dollar inventorship and contract dispute concerning cutting-edge semiconductor technology.

In The Research Foundation for the State University of New York vs Inpria Corporation and JSR Corporation, the plaintiffs filed a motion seeking a Temporary Restraining Order and Preliminary Injunction enjoining, among other things, use of Inpria’s 25 patents, as well as the seizure of substantial assets, which would have effectively shut down the company. Additionally, the motion could have disrupted the planned $6.4 billion acquisition of Inpria’s parent company, JSR Corporation, by Japan Investment Corporation, a Japanese government-backed fund whose investments are overseen by the Japanese Ministry of Economy, Trade, and Industry.

On March 29, 2024, Chief Judge Brenda K. Sannes denied the plaintiff’s motion, concluding the plaintiff’s arguments were “directly contradicted by the record and therefore entirely unpersuasive” and failed to show that irreparable harm would occur in the absence of an injunction. She cited the Paul Hastings team’s arguments in the briefing and during the hearing.

Global Vice Chair of the Intellectual Property practice Eric Dittmann and Global Co-Chair of the Intellectual Property practice Naveen Modi led the Paul Hastings team, which also included partners Joshua Bennett, Isaac Ashkenazi, and Phillip Citroen; attorney Paul Anderson; Of Counsel Chetan Bansal; and associates Sachiko Taniguchi, Rich Rothman, Seal Ortega-Rodriguez, Brooke Wilner, Madeleine Moss, and Jason Denaburg.
