New California Law Requires Notification of Security Breaches Involving Personal Information
May 01, 2003
John J. Altorelli and Michael K. Lindsey
Companies with employees, customers or other business in California should be aware of a new California data security law that goes into effect in just one month. Effective July 1, 2003, this new law – the first of its kind ever adopted – will require such companies to provide notice to California residents of any computer security breach that allowed an unauthorized person to acquire such resident’s personal information. This new requirement is the result of California’s enactment last year of SB 1386.
