Overview

Jonathan Canfield is a partner in the Financial Restructuring group at Paul Hastings, based in the firm’s New York office. Jon represents a broad range of clients — including bondholders, lender groups, hedge funds, private equity firms, banks, institutional investors, official creditors’ committees and debtors — in high-stakes Chapter 11 cases and major out-of-court restructurings. He focuses on helping clients navigate complex distressed situations, leveraging deep knowledge of finance and bankruptcy law to assess risks and opportunities.

Known for his commercial insight and practical advice, Jon frequently leads negotiations involving multiple parties across the capital structure. He is recognized for his ability to build consensus in high-pressure situations. One client told Chambers, “He has an incredible mix of technical ability and commerciality. Jon is hands-on and has a great bedside manner, but he is aggressive when he needs to be. He is great at reading the room.”

Jon also has significant experience in high-value cross-border and domestic financing transactions relevant to restructurings, including syndicated loans, acquisition finance and private placements. His strategic approach has earned recognition from leading legal directories, including Chambers USAThe Legal 500 and Turnarounds & Workouts.
