Paul Hastings Grows Fintech Practice with Preeminent Partners

June 21, 2023

NEW YORK (June 21, 2023) – Further bolstering its Band 1 fintech practice, Paul Hastings LLP announced today that leading fintech and payments lawyers Dana Syracuse and Josh Boehm have joined the firm as partners in New York.

“Dana and Josh are highly regarded in their field and Dana has been one of the most influential lawyers in the fintech and payment space, including playing a leading role in developing the first comprehensive digital currency regulation in the US,” said firm Chair Frank Lopez. “Although we already have a leading fintech platform, their regulatory knowledge and transactional experience will further broaden our client base and innovative offerings and enable us to better serve our long list of corporate, asset management and bank clients intersecting with the evolving fintech sector.”

Both lawyers join from Perkins Coie, where Syracuse was firmwide co-chair of the fintech industry group and co-leader of the blockchain, digital assets, and custody group.

“We are excited to join Paul Hastings,” said Syracuse. “The firm’s exceptional fintech reputation and overall commitment to excellence and client service make it a natural fit for us.”

As associate general counsel for the New York State Department of Financial Services (NYDFS), Syracuse helped oversee its strategy in areas ranging from emerging payment systems, virtual currency, and blockchain technology to chartering the state’s virtual currency exchanges.

Recognized as a “Notable Practitioner” by Chambers and Partners, Syracuse’s practice focuses on blockchain, fintech, e-commerce, and financial services, with an emphasis on business and regulatory issues relating to custody and exchange of digital assets, including the formation and operation of virtual currency trading platforms. He also works with clients on complex bank regulatory issues, such as privacy, data and cyber security, anti-money laundering, Bank Secrecy Act and Know-Your-Customer matters, and consumer protection.

Boehm concentrates his practice on regulatory and commercial issues involving financial technology with a focus on blockchain-based products and services. In addition to maintaining one of the nation’s leading practices in obtaining special-purpose bank and trust charters for digital asset companies, he advises retail, entertainment, and technology companies exploring digital assets as part of a “web3” strategy, helping to design digital consumer products like non-fungible tokens (NFTs) and payment mechanisms, such as dollar-backed stablecoins.

The Paul Hastings global fintech and payments practice is ranked Band 1 by Chambers and Partners. Among its many recognitions, the practice was named Law360’s “FinTech Practice Group of the Year” for its representation of an array of U.S. and international clients ranging from leading global financial institutions and asset managers to innovative startups.
