Paul Hastings Adds Former Federal Prosecutor to Investigations and White Collar Defense Practice in Chicago
July 09, 2024
CHICAGO – Further strengthening its premier global investigations and white-collar defense practice, Paul Hastings LLP today announced that former federal prosecutor and accomplished trial lawyer Renato Mariotti has joined the firm as a partner in Chicago.
Mariotti focuses on complex high-stakes litigation, including private equity and hedge fund litigation, derivative-related claims, and cyber theft. He represents clients in matters related to digital assets and cryptocurrency, governmental inquiries, enforcement actions, director and officer liability, whistleblower allegations, board governance and oversight, and internal controls. He also advises clients on internal investigations, as well as the development of internal compliance programs.
“Renato is a highly-accomplished litigator whose extensive government and private practice experience will further elevate our premier litigation practice and our capabilities in the digital asset space,” said firm Chair Frank Lopez. “His arrival reflects our ongoing commitment to attract talent that provides clients with the top-tier service they need to address their most critical and complex matters and gain additional market share in the investigations and white-collar area.”
A former prosecutor in the Securities and Commodities Fraud Section of the U.S. Attorney's Office, Mariotti was the lead prosecutor in United States v. Michael Coscia, the nation's first federal prosecution of a high-frequency trader for order entry and first prosecution under the anti-spoofing provision of the Dodd-Frank Act. He has tried and won more than 20 civil and criminal cases in federal and state court, including United States v. Jitesh Thakkar, the first-ever criminal case charging a non-trader with market manipulation.
“The opportunity to bring Paul Hastings’ robust capabilities to my clients and to collaborate with the firm’s incredible roster of talent was one I couldn’t pass up,” said Mariotti. “The global reach and strength of the Paul Hastings platform across practices is undeniable.”
Joining from Bryan Cave Leighton Paisner LLP, Mariotti also has experience representing hospitals, pharmacies, and providers in enforcement matters involving civil False Claims Act litigation and parallel criminal investigations, the Anti-Kickback Statute and Stark Law, and health care fraud.
Mariotti is the latest top-flight litigator to join the firm in the past year. Other prominent additions include data and cybersecurity litigator Michelle Reed and trial and regulatory enforcement lawyer Manuel Berrelez (Dallas); a 12-lawyer white collar and investigations team led by Antonin Lévy (Paris); a six-partner IP litigator team (Palo Alto and Washington, D.C.); white collar and investigations partner Stuart Alford KC and international arbitration and commercial litigation partner Oliver Browne (London); white collar and investigations partner Adam Fee (Los Angeles/Century City); complex litigator Susan Leader (Century City); IP litigator Rudy Kim (Palo Alto); complex commercial litigator Paul Genender (Dallas); Investigations and SEC enforcement partner Brad Bondi (Washington, D.C.); IP litigator Doug Sawyer (Chicago); international arbitration partner Garreth Wong (London); securities and commercial litigator Jennifer Conn (New York); and commercial litigator Josh Berman (New York).
