May 19, 2014
New York, NY - Paul Hastings LLP, a leading global law firm, announced today that John Nowak has joined the firm’s Investigations and White Collar Defense practice in New York as of counsel. He joins from the United States Attorney's Office, Eastern District of New York (EDNY), where he was a Deputy Chief of the Business and Securities Fraud Section.
“Paul Hastings continues to make investments to expand our Investigations and White Collar Defense practice,” said Barry Sher, chair of the firm’s Litigation practice. “We have a growing team of leading lawyers with a range of experience, which allows us to provide innovative solutions to our clients for the most complex and difficult issues they face,” he added.
“Having served in both the SEC's NY Regional Office and the U.S. Attorney's Office for the EDNY, John has tremendous experience and a great track record,” said Ken Breen, chair of the Investigations and White Collar Defense practice. “We are excited to have another senior lawyer with former SEC and prosecutor credentials join our active and growing practice,” he added.
As Deputy Chief of the Business and Securities Fraud Section at EDNY, Mr. Nowak managed large-scale investigations of securities fraud, FCPA violations and other white-collar crimes, in multiple domestic and foreign jurisdictions. He supervised fifteen senior prosecutors pursuing cases involving insider trading, fraud, extortion, FCPA violations, computer hacking, money laundering and market manipulation. He also gained significant jury trial experience involving securities and other complex white-collar criminal cases, and he routinely collaborated with senior officials at the DOJ, the SEC and other regulatory agencies regarding policy matters.
He was previously a Branch Chief in the Enforcement Division at the SEC, where he supervised a team of eight attorneys that investigated and brought charges against companies and individuals involving a variety of securities law violations, including insider trading, best execution and short sale violations, PIPE financings, breaches of fiduciary duties, adviser conflicts of interest, soft dollar arrangements, beneficial ownership disclosures and broker-dealer regulations.
The arrival of Mr. Nowak at Paul Hastings continues the expansion of the firm’s leading global compliance, investigations, and enforcement practice, and follows the recent addition of partner Gary Giampetruzzi, who joined the firm in February.
