December 16, 2020
Washington D.C. – Paul Hastings LLP, a leading global law firm, has been named to Law360’s prestigious list of “Practice Groups of the Year” in the Compliance category.
The profile notes the firm’s role advising Braskem, the largest petrochemical company in Latin America, through the completion of an anti-corruption monitorship after a deal with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission — a first for any Brazilian company.
Kwame J. Manley, global chair of the Investigations and White Collar Defense practice, is quoted throughout the profile, and says that the group is one of the fastest growing at Paul Hastings, with new hires in 2020 in in Shanghai, Hong Kong and other places. "We are looking to expand in the new year in London, New York as well as on the West Coast."
The article notes that Manley is also a DOJ-appointed independent compliance monitor for a Panasonic Corp. subsidiary in connection with a 2018 agreement over allegations the company violated the FCPA.
Partner Jay Darden comments that the integration between the investigations and compliance teams sets Paul Hastings apart "in a way that few other firms are able to replicate." Darden discusses the successful Braskem monitorship, as well as one for Brazilian aircraft manufacturer Embraer SA, whose monitorship concluded in June.
Corinne Lammers has also advised Braskem and Embraer, among many other clients, through the successful completion of their independent compliance monitorships, and is currently advising Technip FMC regarding its self-reporting obligations to the DOJ and SEC. Hong Kong and Shanghai partner Shaun Wu has this year been appointed as the Independent Compliance Monitor to an Asian company in connection with its sanction by the Asian Development Bank for integrity violations. Other Paul Hastings partners active in compliance include Tim Dickinson, Joy Dowdle, Jonathan Drimmer, and Bryan Parr.
The Law360 award follows other recent accolades for Paul Hastings, including being ranked in the Top 10 of Global Investigations Review’s GIR 100, an annual guide to the world’s leading cross border investigations practices; and being named Washington D.C.’s White Collar Litigation Department of the Year by The National Law Journal (NLJ).
