Overview

Doug Sawyer is a partner in the Intellectual Property practice of Paul Hastings and is based in the firm's Chicago office.

Mr. Sawyer’s practice focuses on intellectual property litigation and enforcement. He has extensive litigation experience, including complex civil litigation, patent and trademark infringement, trade secret misappropriation, false advertising, deceptive trade practices, antitrust, and breach of contract. Mr. Sawyer has counseled clients on all aspects of intellectual property procurement and protections. In addition, he has drafted technology-related agreements, including licensing agreements, IP asset purchases, and strategic alliances.

  • Solutex N.A. v. Designs for Health and KD Pharma Bexbach (U.S. District Court for the Middle District of Florida). Represented Solutex in a patent infringement action involving novel fish oil fractionates containing specialized pro-resolving mediators and their precursors.
  • Transocean Sedco Forex Ventures v. The Oilgear Company (U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Texas). Represented Oilgear in a patent infringement action involving accumulators in the subsea systems.
  • Lone Star SCM v. Honeywell International, Inc. (U.S. District Court for the Western District of Texas). Represented Honeywell in a patent infringement action involving radio frequency identification (“RFID”) technology.
  • Crow Hill LLC v. Big Agnes, Inc. (U.S. District Court for the District of Colorado). Represented Big Agnes in a patent infringement action involving collapsible chair design.
  • Zebra Technologies Corporation, et al. v. Intermec Inc., et al. (U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois). Represented Intermec (which was acquired by Honeywell) in a 20-patent case relating to scanner, printer, RFID, and battery technologies.
  • Alien Technology, LLC v. Intermec, Inc., Intermec IP Corp., Intermec Technologies Corp. (United States Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit). Representing Intermec in a patent infringement action involving a system for reading and writing data from and onto remote tags.
  • Netfuel, Inc. v. F5 Networks, Inc. (U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois). Representing F5 Networks, Inc. in a patent infringement action involving managing computer network resources.
  • Upaid Systems, Ltd. v. Card Concepts, Inc. (U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois). Representing Card Concepts, Inc. in a patent infringement action involving enhanced communication platform and related communication method using the platform.
  • TriQuint Semiconductor Inc. v. Avago Technologies, Ltd., et al. (U.S. District Court for the District of Arizona). Represented TriQuint Semiconductor, a manufacturer of high-performance RF solutions used in wireless communications, in a patent, antitrust, and trade secret case involving Bulk Acoustic Wave technology.

  • Realtime Data, LLC v. Code42 Software, Inc. (U.S. District Court for the District of Colorado). Represented Code42 in a patent infringement action involving data compression technology.
  • Realtime Data LLC v. Savvis Communications Corporation, et al. (U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Texas). Represented Savvis Communications Corporation in a patent infringement action involving data compression technology.
  • Gates Corporation v. Optibelt Corporation (U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois). Representing Gates in a competitor action involving polyurea-urethane cord treatment technology.
  • Eppendorf AG, et al. v. Nanosphere Inc. (U.S. District Court for the District of Delaware). Represented Nanosphere against Eppendorf in suit for infringement of patent relating to detecting and quantifying target compounds captured by an array on a solid surface.
  • Microsoft Corporation v. Phoenix Solutions Inc. (U.S. District Court for the Central District of California). Fifteen patent declaratory relief action concerning speech recognition and natural language processing.
  • Riddell Inc. v. Schutt Sports Inc. (U.S. District Court for the Western District of Wisconsin). Obtained a $30 million verdict for Riddell in a patent infringement case directed to protective technology in football helmets.
  • Wilson Sporting Goods Company v. Easton Sports Inc. (U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois). Successfully represented Easton Sports in patent infringement case, involving claims and counterclaims, directed to baseball bat technology.
  • Everything Baseball Limited, LLC v. Wilson Sporting Goods Company, et al. (U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois). Successfully defended Easton Sports in a patent infringement case directed to chest protector technology.
  • Gold Medal Products Inc. v. C. Cretors & Company (U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Kentucky). Represented Defendant Cretors, a popcorn machine manufacturer, in a case alleging false advertising and patent infringement.

Intellectual Property Litigation

  • Burkhart Resources Ltd. v. Arthrex, Inc. (Florida Court of Appeals, Second District). Represented Arthrex, Inc., a medical device company, in a royalties dispute against Stephen S. Burkhart, M.D. and his entity, Burkhart Resource Limited Partnership.
  • Kraft Heinz Foods Company v. Golden State Foods (U.S. District Court for the District of Delaware). Representing Kraft in a trade secrets dispute against its competitor, Golden State.
  • Direct Supply Inc. v. Park Supply of America (U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Wisconsin). Represented Direct Supply in a trademark infringement dispute against Park Supply.
