Paul Hastings and Queen Mary University of London School of Law announce new Legal Innovation Internship

October 07, 2021

LondonPaul Hastings LLP, the global leading law firm, and Queen Mary University of London School of Law (QMUL) have partnered to create a unique legal innovation focused internship opportunity.

Students on QMUL’s Law in Practice degree can now apply for a one year internship in Paul Hastings’ global Practice Innovation, Knowledge and Legal Solutions department based in the London office.

The Practice Innovation and Legal Solutions intern will work across the firm’s global practice groups to seek out legal innovation opportunities. Using state of the art legaltech tools coupled with industry methodologies, they will work to implement solutions that improve legal matter workflows. The first intern has been recruited and starts this month.

Arun Birla, Tax Partner and Chair of Paul Hastings’ London office said:

“By embarking on this partnership with QMUL, Paul Hastings is demonstrating its commitment to hiring the brightest future legal talent. The legal industry is currently undergoing a period of rapid technological transformation, and it’s vital that as a firm we stay on the forefront of this change – not just for our clients, but also to help develop the talent of tomorrow. We need to be creating multi-disciplinary practitioners for the future, and this is a great step forwards in achieving this.”

Dr Nigel Spencer, Professor of Professional Practice and Education Innovation at QMUL School of Law commented:

We invented the Law in Practice degree option to offer that rare opportunity for students to apply their knowledge, and to build skills, immediately in the workplace. It’s about giving students a whole year where they can see the real world challenges currently being faced by legal practitioners and their clients, and to learn about the solutions they are creating to these. I am especially excited that Paul Hastings is offering our students a placement in the team which is helping to define what their ‘firm of the future’ looks like – working internationally across their firm, and experimenting with technologies and tools which will be applied to legal practice over the coming years”.

Paul Hastings’ MD of Practice Innovation & Knowledge, Nikki Shaver, said:

“We’re thrilled to partner with QMUL to provide opportunities for the next generation of law students to learn about alternative career paths in law. We expect the program, which will expose selected students to the wide variety of exciting projects undertaken by the Paul Hastings Practice Innovation Knowledge and Legal Solutions department, to supercharge these students’ skillsets and set them up to become successful lawyers of the future.”

At Paul Hastings, our purpose is clear — to help our clients and people navigate new paths to growth. With a strong presence throughout Asia, Europe, Latin America, and the U.S., Paul Hastings is recognized as one of the world’s most innovative global law firms.
