Overview

Ryan Poitras is an associate in the National Security & International Trade practice based in the firm's Washington, D.C. office. His practice focuses on foreign investment regulation and U.S. trade controls compliance, including the representation of clients in national security reviews before the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States ("CFIUS").

Ryan has represented a wide variety of U.S. and non-U.S. companies in reviews before CFIUS, with specific experience representing clients active in the areas of artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, and alternative energy/"green technologies." Ryan advises on global laws relating to national security reviews of foreign investment, and regularly assists in the coordination and preparation of national security-related filings for complex, multi-jurisdictional transactions. Ryan also provides advice regarding compliance with U.S. sanctions, export controls, anti-boycott, and customs laws, including regulations administered and enforced by the Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC), the Bureau of Industry and Security (BIS), and the Directorate of Defense Trade Controls (DDTC).

Ryan received his law degree from the American University Washington College of Law in 2019, where he graduated magna cum laude and served on the editorial board of the American University International Law Review. He is a published author on the regulation of artificial intelligence technology. Ryan received his B.A. degree in Political Science in 2015 from the University of California, Los Angeles. He is admitted to practice law in the District of Columbia and Maryland.
